I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of

Your Excellency's despatch No. 2403/08 of the 4th. instant, reporting that Hongkong had been the scene of a riot di- rected against the vendors of Japanese goods and requesting

me to call the attention of the Chinese Government to the

matter.

I have accordingly addressed a Note to Prince Ching, copy of which is enclosed, pointing out the gravity of the occurrence and requesting that the agents of the Society which promoted the riot may be severely punished and the Viceroy of Canton be urged to take all precautions to prevent the recurrence of such an incident.
